Mean Girls 2

Directed by Melanie Mayron

The story

Confident senior Jo begins the new school year by breaking her own cardinal rule: don't get involved in girl drama. but when she sees timid Abby preyed upon by Queen Bee Mandi and her minions, she takes sides in a viciously funny girl-world-war that turns North Shore High School upside down.

What it’s like

Bright, glossy digital picture with saturated sunshine, candy-coloured wardrobes and locker-lined corridors that look freshly painted, shot in tidy medium shots and quick cutaways that keep the frame busy. The mood is sunny and bouncy, with a pop-leaning score and comic sound effects that punctuate every jab, so the cruelty stays cartoonish rather than sharp. The pacing is brisk and scene-driven, with a dose of slapstick and mean-girl set pieces that play for laughs more than sting. The emotional register is light and cheerful, and the arc follows a confident girl who learns that standing up for someone weaker costs her something and gains her something back. Intensity is low: verbal cutting, teasing, social humiliation and some pratfalls, but no real violence, no gore, and nothing sexual beyond teen crushes. It suits a lazy afternoon, a sleepover, or a comfort rewatch, and it is for viewers who want a fun, gentle, colourful take on high school drama.
