The story

For teenage misfits Hunter and Kevin, the path to glory is clear: Devote themselves to metal. Win Battle of the Bands. And be worshipped like gods.

What it’s like

Bright, flat suburban daylight over strip malls, garages and sweaty basement rehearsal rooms, with a warm, slightly washed palette that keeps the drab corners of a California town feeling lived-in rather than bleak. The camera stays close and easygoing, handheld in the band scenes and unhurried in the quiet ones, and the riffs do most of the atmospheric work: loud, chugging guitars that turn a kitchen argument or a bus ride into something ridiculously epic. Its vibe is scruffy, affectionate and deadpan, the kind of teen comedy that takes its outsiders seriously while laughing at their certainty. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort watch with friends, or a grin-inducing evening after a long week. The pace is brisk and episodic, with playful bursts of humour and a gentle, bittersweet undercurrent about friendship and the fragile dream of being noticed. Intensity is low: some profanity, teenage awkwardness and a few mild scuffles, but no real violence, gore or sexual content. It is for people who enjoy music-obsessed coming-of-age stories with a sincere heart and a wink.
