The story

The story of Michael Jackson, one of the most influential artists the world has ever known, and his life beyond the music. His journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world, highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career.

What it’s like

Stage lighting does most of the work here: hot pink and amber spotlight haze over sweaty arena crowds, sharp black-and-white rehearsal rooms, and the glossy sheen of 1970s sets and studio booths. The concert sequences are built for sound, with the music pushed up front and the camera moving with the dancing, while the quieter scenes in family homes lean on warm interior lamps and tight, uneasy framing. The mood is ambitious and wistful, with a current of dread running under the glamour. Its pace follows a rise-and-strain shape, with long stretches of rehearsal and touring and sharper emotional spikes. Child abuse and a harsh, controlling father are central, shown through shouting, intimidation and physical punishment in domestic scenes rather than gore, but these moments land heavily and are not softened. It suits a viewer who wants music history and period detail with real emotional weight, and it is not a gentle or low-stakes watch. It is for people drawn to backstage drama, the cost of fame, and portraits of family pressure.
