The story
At a prestigious all-male university, three friends seek love outside of the school grounds; at the same time, a newly-hired music teacher seeks to befriend and loosen up the militantly strict headmaster.
What it’s like
Saturated, storybook colour on a formal campus: crisp whites and deep bottle-green blazers against warm wood, marble and stone, with the tall arches and manicured lawns of an old boarding school gleaming in bright, sunny daylight. Camera moves are lush and fluid, with sweeping crane shots and dancers framed in wide symmetrical tableaux, while the many songs break the drama into operatic set pieces, sung over orchestral swells, big choral arrangements and bright melodic hooks. Dusk and night scenes lean on soft lamplight and glowing interiors, giving the romance a dreamy, warm glow. The mood is earnest and sentimental, a blend of youthful exuberance, generational tension and tender longing, with melodrama played straight and emotions turned up high. Its people move from rigid rules and wounded pride toward warmth and reconciliation. Intensity is low: some tense confrontations and a few sad moments, but no violence, gore or sexual content. Suits a long, cozy evening, a comfort rewatch, or anyone who loves big musical romance and gentle, heartfelt family drama.
