The story

Monster Tale is a Nintendo DS platformer and virtual pet game developed by DreamRift and published by Majesco in 2011. It was only released in North America. It follows the story of a young girl, named Ellie, and her adventures in Monster World with her monster companion, Chomp. Together they must stop the evil Kid-Kings and return Monster World to its rightful inhabitants, the monsters and also find a way for Ellie to return home.

What it’s like

Bright, chunky 2D sprites on the small DS screen, with cartoonish monsters and bold, saturated fantasy backdrops that feel deliberately old-fashioned, like a late-era handheld platformer. Sunny meadows give way to dimmer caves and overgrown ruins, and the sound is a light, bouncy chiptune score that loops comfortably under jumps and wall-slides. Dialogue arrives in subtitled text boxes over quiet stretches, so the pace feels unhurried. Platforming is the core rhythm: blocks to push, walls to climb, bosses to learn and defeat, with stats and levels creeping up between stages. Violence is cartoonish and low-stakes, mostly bumping and bopping enemies, with occasional carnivorous plants that bite but never gore. The mood is warm and encouraging, a coming-of-age adventure about a young girl and her monster companion, with a gentle sense of wonder and some mild peril. It suits an easy weekend session, a comfortable retro play in bed, or a relaxed break after school. It is for players who want an old-school action platformer with a soft, friendly heart and no real cruelty.
