The story

An immigrant Indian mother fights the Norwegian foster care system and legal machinery to win back custody of her children.

What it’s like

Warm, saturated domestic interiors give way to cold, washed-out Norwegian institutional spaces: sterile government offices, pale wood-panelled courtrooms, grey Oslo streets under overcast skies. The camera stays close on Rani Mukerji's face through long, unhurried handheld takes, so every flicker of exhaustion and defiance reads clearly. Dialogue-heavy scenes carry much of the weight, while the score swells with strings and tabla-tinged percussion at the emotional peaks and drops away to near silence in the bureaucratic meetings. The mood is indignant and grinding, with a steady undercurrent of injustice rather than thrills, and its pacing favours sustained argument over quick cuts. Intensity is low on violence and gore, with no graphic content; the tension comes from emotional cruelty, a child separated from a parent, and the slow grind of an unfair system. Its central arc follows a woman refusing to be reduced to a case file, and the film suits viewers who want a drama of persistence, bias, and a mother's fierce resolve.
