The story

Via a magic mirror, Twilight Sparkle travels into an alternate universe in order to recover a crown that was stolen from the Crystal Empire. Upon her arrival she is horrified to learn that she has turned into a human.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated digital animation with flat pastel palettes, clean outlines and a glossy, sugary sheen, the look of a Saturday-morning cartoon grown up for a teen setting. Lockers, cafeteria tables and a school gym glow under even, cheerful daylight, and the frames stay busy and kinetic, with quick cuts and bouncing camera moves in the musical numbers, where bursts of confetti, sparkle effects and pop-rock tracks fill the sound. Between the songs the mood settles into warm, goofy, low-key comedy, the kind of light viewing that suits a sleepy weekend afternoon, a child's movie night or background company while folding laundry. The pacing is brisk and the emotional register is sincere and upbeat: a group of friends learning to trust each other, a teenager's anxious wish to belong, and a few broadly drawn rivalries that resolve with hugs. Violence is absent; the threat is mild and the peril is comic rather than frightening, with no gore, sexual content or real cruelty. It is for families, young children and adults who want something gentle, colourful and sweetly optimistic.
