The story

From the mega-bestselling creator of Heartstopper, a must-have novella in which Heartstopper's lead characters, Nick and Charlie, face one of their biggest challenges yet. Absence makes the heart grow fonder... right? Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie love their nearly inseparable life together. But soon Nick will be leaving for university, and Charlie, a year younger, will be left behind. Everyone's asking if they're staying together, which is a stupid question... or at least that's what Nick and Charlie assume at first. As the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie start to question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Charlie is sure he's holding Nick back... and Nick can't tell what Charlie's thinking. Things spiral from there. Everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever. What will it take for Nick and Charlie to defy the odds?

What it’s like

Soft, sunlit school-year warmth gives way to a quieter, more anxious ache in this companion novella to the Heartstopper series, a short, breezy read that moves between chatty prose and the sketchy, speech-bubbled panels that make the page feel like a notebook doodled in the margins of a long day. Its palette is pastel and gentle, its sensory world ordinary and close: bedrooms, school corridors, phone screens glowing with late-night messages, the restless texture of a summer that is ending. The voice is earnest and funny, with a constant undertow of worry, and the sound on the page is the rhythm of text exchanges and half-finished sentences. Vibe: tender, anxious, warm underneath. It suits a rainy Sunday, a comfort reread, or an evening when you want something light that still takes feelings seriously. The emotional register is tender with real stakes: a close pair of boys learning that love can strain under distance and self-doubt, and that they must talk instead of guess. Intensity is very low; there is no violence, and the strongest moments are emotional rather than explicit, with only mild, non-graphic physical affection. It is for readers who want a sweet, honest queer romance about anxiety, communication and first love, especially fans of the Heartstopper world.
