The story
Hapless museum night watchman Larry Daley must help his living, breathing exhibit friends out of a pickle now that they've been transferred to the archives at the Smithsonian Institution. Larry's (mis)adventures this time include close encounters with Amelia Earhart, Abe Lincoln and Ivan the Terrible.
What it’s like
Bright, busy and warmly comic, with saturated colour and a lot of happening in every frame: the Smithsonian's marble halls and cavernous storage vaults glow under even, practical-looking light, while the Egyptian, Roman and Civil War displays pop with gold, terracotta and toy-box primaries. The camera moves briskly and often handheld-adjacent during chases, but the set-ups stay clean and legible, and the digital effects make the wax-and-stone figures bounce with a cartoonish elasticity. Sound is a big, bouncy orchestral score with comic percussion stings and sudden silences for gags. The vibe is brisk, cheerful, and gently chaotic, the sort of popcorn afternoon that suits a family weekend or a lazy holiday rewatch with kids. The pacing is quick and episodic, with the emotional arc simply a sweet, reliable one: a bumbling night guard learns to be a steadier father and friend. Violence is cartoonish slapstick with no gore, a few peril moments and some mild menace from villains, nothing lingering or disturbing. It is aimed at families and anyone who wants undemanding, feel-good spectacle with plenty of laughs.
