The story
An erotic story about a woman, the assistant of an art gallery, who gets involved in an impersonal affair with a man. She barely knows about his life, only about the sex games they play, so the relationship begins to get complicated.
What it’s like
Cool, saturated 1980s New York rendered in glossy, sensual close-ups: sweat-sheened skin, tinted glass towers, rain-streaked windows, and interiors lit by hard overhead fluorescents that soften into lamplit amber once the apartment door shuts. Adrian Lyne's camera hovers and lingers, cutting between slick music-video montage and long, hushed passages of silence broken only by breath, a ticking clock, or a pop song drifting through a radio. Its vibe is seductive and anxious, a kind of sleek unease that tips into obsession, best suited to a late night alone or a moody rewatch when you want style and tension over story. The pacing is fitful: languid stretches interrupted by sharp, almost jittery shifts. Emotionally it follows a woman discovering the limits of her own desire as an intimate connection stays stubbornly impersonal. The sexual content is explicit and frequent, with sadomasochistic games, fetish imagery and nudity throughout, and the mood is charged rather than violent, though some scenes carry real coercive discomfort. For adult viewers who want an erotic thriller with polish and psychological edge, not something gentle.
