The story

After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him. Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything. They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth. But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

What it’s like

Brooding, dragon-lit darkness and cold stone courtyards, with the prose spending long stretches on flight, wind, and the heat of a bonded beast beneath a rider's thighs. The voice is close and breathless, first person, quick to shift from tense strategy to aching intimacy, and the world is built from sensory detail: frost on the battlements, smoke over burning villages, the metallic pulse of a dragon's magic. The vibe is brooding, romantic dread, the mood of a late-night read with a storm pressing at the window. Pacing runs fast and propulsive, with chapters that turn on reversals and cliffhangers and slower, heated scenes between the lovers. Violence is frequent and graphic in battle, with bloody injuries and named deaths, and there is fear and cruelty throughout. Sexual content is explicit and recurring, so this does not suit anyone seeking something gentle. Its emotional register is intense, with grief, loyalty, and fierce longing driving the characters, who are watching a headstrong young woman push past her limits and choose between duty and love. It suits readers who want escapist romantasy with high stakes, dragons, and sizzling tension.
