The story
Tommy Egan leaves New York behind and plans to take on Chicago, using his outsider status to break all the local rules and rewrite them on his quest to become the biggest drug dealer in the city.
What it’s like
Hard-edged urban crime drama shot in saturated, night-heavy Chicago: sodium-orange streetlight, cold blue interiors, neon bars and glossy SUVs against rain-slicked asphalt, with handheld camera that stays close to faces during tense negotiations and widens to show the grey sprawl of the city from overpasses. The score leans on synth pulses and hip-hop beats, with long silences broken by sudden gunshots and car engines. The vibe is restless, cynical and cold-blooded, with a sense of ambition curdling into paranoia. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with each hour building to a confrontation, and the emotional register stays hard and transactional, following a hardened outsider who trusts almost no one and is slowly pulled into the consequences of every choice. Violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, including shootings, beatings and threats, with some drug use and sexual content; it is not gentle. Best for viewers who want a dark, character-driven crime saga with a strong sense of place and momentum, and who are comfortable with sustained tension and graphic peril.
