The story

Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth.

What it’s like

Soft window light falls across cream drawing-room walls, candles glow in dim evening parlours, and the English countryside shows in wet greens, rain-dark lanes and misty lakeside mornings. The camera tends to hold still and watch people talk, with long conversational scenes framed in doorways and across tables, and the Carl Davis score rests on gentle strings and piano that swell at the emotional turns. Six hour-long episodes move at an unhurried, country-house pace, with dancing, letters, walks and tea as the main action. The tone is witty, warm and quietly romantic, with sharp social comedy and no violence, gore or fear, only brief sensual moments and a few tense family disputes. Its central arc, a proud, misjudging pair gradually revising their opinions of each other, is carried in glances and stiff politeness. It suits a rainy Sunday, a slow winter evening or a comfort rewatch, and it is for viewers who love Georgian costume drama, literate dialogue and the slow satisfaction of watching people change.
