The story

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

What it’s like

Cold blue-grey light and vast, sterile interiors give way to warm amber glow in the gloomier chambers, with Ridley Scott's sweeping camera drifting through holographic star charts, mist-filled alien caverns and gleaming white corridors. The look is polished and painterly, with glossy digital surfaces, anamorphic widescreen framing and occasional eerie stillness, while the score swells with low orchestral drones and brooding strings that build to thundering dread. The vibe is clinical unease tipped into awe, a slow-burn sci-fi mystery that rewards a dark room and full attention. Pacing is deliberate, with long stretches of exploration and tense quiet broken by sudden, sharp jolts. Its emotional register is cool and philosophical, following a scientist's yearning for answers about creation and an android whose calm hides something colder, with the human characters gradually unravelling under the weight of what they find. Intensity is moderate to high: there are bloody surgical scenes, a grisly stasis-chamber body horror sequence, and creature violence that is frequent and graphic, though the gore is more startling than relentless. It suits viewers who enjoy intelligent, atmospheric horror-tinged science fiction and don't mind a bleak, unsettling ending.

More films like Prometheus

People love Prometheus for its restless hunger for origins: a devout, driven scientist who needs answers about where humanity came from, and a hostile, indifferent universe that answers back. It leaves a cold unease that lingers.

  1. Alien: Covenant
    2017 · Film

It shares the same creator-and-creation dread and the android lead's obsessive streak, but it trades the faith-versus-truth search for a more straightforward survival horror.

  2. Annihilation
    2018 · Film

A guarded scientist pushes forward into an unknowable alien zone, carrying private grief and guilt, though it is quieter and more ambiguous than Prometheus.

  3. Ex Machina
    2015 · Film

It keeps the lead's unease and the sense of a clever, untrustworthy creator steering the story, with a colder, more contained tone about the boundary between human and made.

  4. Blade Runner
    1982 · Film

It asks what makes a person human and whether a maker owes its creations anything, from a weary, guarded lead, though it is more noir than cosmic horror.
