The story
A grifter in 1960s New York is hired to convince a wealthy man's son to return home from Italy and begins a life of deceit, fraud and murder.
What it’s like
Stark black-and-white frames of Italian coastlines, sunlit piazzas and shadowed villa interiors, with the glare of Mediterranean light set against the cool gloom of Manhattan apartments. The camera tends toward patient, composed shots that let faces and empty rooms carry the tension, and the sparse jazz and quiet strings leave long stretches of silence for footsteps, clinking glasses and the hum of a train. Its vibe is elegant unease, a slow-burning cat-and-mouse with the steady dread of someone who may be found out at any moment. It suits a late, alone evening with the lights low, or a patient weekend when you want to sit with a story rather than be jolted by it. Pacing is deliberate, and the emotional register stays cool and watchful, following a charming drifter who gradually slips into a more ruthless self while the people around him start to sense something is wrong. Intensity is moderate: a few sudden, shocking acts of violence, some tense confrontations and a steady undercurrent of menace, but no gore and little explicit cruelty. It is for viewers who enjoy character-driven crime, moody period detail and the pleasure of watching a lie grow more fragile with each scene.
