The story
This is the story of the legendary Rosario Tijeras, the beautiful warrior from a slum who fell in love with Antonio and Emilio, two handsome and wealthy young men. Antonio, a young architect, desperately rushes the dying Rosario Tijeras to a nearby hospital. The beautiful Rosario has been shot four times by a hitman. While he waits for his beloved Rosario to be saved from her wounds, Antonio recalls how Rosario, a beautiful teenager, became the murderer Rosario Tijeras. And how he, a dashing young man, makes her his obsession. The woman of his dreams.
What it’s like
Glossy Colombian telenovela polish: saturated Medellín interiors, sun-warmed balconies, and nightlife in pinks, golds and deep blues, with the brightness of the wealthy neighbourhoods set hard against the grey concrete of the hillside slums. Camera work leans on close two-shots, slow pushes into faces during confrontations, and frequent swooping music cues in piano and romantic pop ballads that tip scenes into melodrama. The city's humidity and traffic noise hum under dialogue, and rain and night streets recur as mood. Vibe: operatic, heightened, sensual and a little feverish, with a constant undertow of danger. Violence is present and sudden, with shootings and a few bloody aftermaths, but it is shown without lingering gore; sexuality appears in romantic and bedroom scenes that stay fairly tasteful. Pacing is serialized and emotionally repetitive: love affairs knot tighter, loyalties crack, and a headstrong young woman's loyalty to her roots pulls against her desire for the life she cannot have. Best for viewers who enjoy soapy intensity, romantic obsession and crime drama dressed in designer colour, rather than anything quiet or gentle.
