Scandal: Story of an Obsession

2023

The story

Inés is a 42-year-old woman who, when times start to get tough, attempts to drown herself. She is saved by Hugo, a teenage boy who then becomes obsessed with her. A forbidden romance develops between the two, whose consequences end up affecting all those around them.

What it’s like

Shot as a Spanish-language drama with a sombre, adult register, this series builds its unease from the relationship at its centre rather than from any stylistic flourish that the metadata can vouch for. Its opening is heavy: a woman in a moment of despair, and a young man who becomes fixated on her afterwards. What follows is a slow, charged, morally uncomfortable story of desire, secrecy and the damage it spreads through the people around the couple, with the age difference and the teenager's obsession kept at the front of every scene. The tone is grave and emotionally fraught rather than soothing, and the attempted suicide, the coercive intensity and the sexual undercurrent are all present, so this is not something to put on as gentle background. It suits viewers who want a serious, discomfiting drama about obsession and transgression, who can sit with an uneasy subject, and who are prepared for the intensity it carries.
