The story

In America's Gulf Coast region, grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts by crews of young people. Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or by chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life...

What it’s like

Gritty, sun-scorched and oily, with the hot grey haze of a post-storm coastline pressing down on every page. Bacigalupi's prose is clipped and muscular, built from working-class slang, the sour smell of diesel, rust and rotting salt marsh, and the physical grind of tearing wire out of dead hulls. The mood is tense and hungry, a low hum of hardship that sharpens into bursts of danger, then breathes out into quieter moments of wonder when the story turns toward a gleaming wreck of luxury and a different kind of life. Its pacing is brisk and urgent, with short chapters that keep pushing forward. Violence is present and sometimes brutal: injuries from machinery, fights, and a storm-driven peril, with some dark cruelty from adults and a few harrowing deaths, though nothing is lingered on for shock. Emotionally it follows a hard-scrabble boy learning loyalty, courage and what family might mean outside blood. Suited to a late-night read with the lights low, or a teen reader who likes survival adventure with grit and heart, and to anyone drawn to climate-shadowed futures and tough, earnest protagonists.
