The story

Within the Metaverse, Hiro is offered a datafile named Snow Crash by a man named Raven who hints that it is a form of narcotic. Hiro's friend and fellow hacker Da5id views a bitmap image contained in the file which causes his computer to crash and Da5id to suffer brain damage in the real world. This is the future we now live where all can be brought to life in the metaverse and now all can be taken away. Follow on an adventure with Hiro and YT as they work with the mob to uncover a plot of biblical proportions.

What it’s like

Fast, comic, sprawling prose with a hard-boiled wiseguy voice and a restless, cinematic cut between scenes: a neon-soaked, sun-scorched near-future where the streets of a fractured city blur into the glossy grid of a virtual world, all loud signage, pizza-delivery speed and sudden dark jokes. The mood is irreverent cyberpunk with a satirical grin, lively and a little manic, the sort of book that rewards a long train ride or a loud, lazy weekend when you want momentum and a constant stream of inventive asides. Pacing is brisk and digressive, with fast chapter cuts, encyclopedic side-essays and running gags that keep the energy up. The emotional register stays wry rather than tender, though its loner protagonist, a sharp-tongued hacker, slowly finds loyalty and a sense of belonging among odd allies. Violence is frequent and often cartoonishly brutal, with sword fights, gunplay and occasional gore; there is some sexual content and crude language, and dark, unsettling imagery around the viral threat at the story's core. It suits readers who enjoy satire, technological speculation and a boisterous voice more than quiet atmosphere.
