The story

Allison "Sonny" Munroe makes the leap from the Midwest to Los Angeles to join the cast of "So Random!," the most popular sketch comedy TV show for kids and tweens. Her fellow young actors are resident teen queen Tawni, super suave Nico, gregarious funnyman Grady and quirky Zora. Now Sonny must somehow balance these new friendships while adjusting to her family's decidedly different way of life in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Sonny must also contend with heartthrob Chad Dylan Cooper, star of the rival show "MacKenzie Falls," who makes it known that he thinks his dramatic work is better than her comedy career.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated sitcom color with the flat, even lighting of a multi-camera studio: sets lit like sunny soundstages, the warm pastel palette of a Los Angeles kids' network, and wardrobe in candy brights. The camera stays fairly conventional, medium two-shots and punch-in reaction close-ups, with a laugh track and quick cuts between sketch-style set pieces. The sound is upbeat pop-rock theme music, bouncy stings and a constant studio hum of comic timing. It feels like a sunny, bubbly afternoon with the TV on: nostalgic for anyone who grew up with Disney Channel-era programming, and lightly aspirational about performing and getting your big break. Its episodes are brisk and punchy, built on physical gags, one-liners and friendly rivalries rather than real stakes. Intensity is very low: slapstick pratfalls, playful insults and mild teen romance, with no violence, no gore, and no sexual content beyond a kiss or a crush. Best for tweens and teens, or adults wanting a light, comforting watch after a long day, and for anyone who enjoys sitcoms about a close-knit cast and family.
