The story
South of the Circle is an emotional narrative experience exploring the relationship between Peter and Clara, Cambridge academics caught up in the political conflict of the Cold War. The story focuses on the weight of life choices - between career, true love and the desire to keep our promises.
What it’s like
Cold, washed-out palettes of grey stone, frosted glass and pale winter sun give this game a hushed, wintry look, with stylised hand-painted scenes that feel like illustrated stills from a mid-century novel. Its point-and-click exploration moves at a deliberate, unhurried pace, built around conversations, letters and quiet rooms where a single choice can carry weight. The soundtrack leans on sparse, melancholy strings and piano, with long stretches of near silence that let the tension of a divided loyalty settle in. The mood is wistful and tense, a slow ache of cold-war unease softened by tenderness between two people who have to decide what they can hold onto. Violence is absent, and its darkness comes from political pressure and emotional strain rather than shock or gore. It suits a rainy evening, a slow solo session, or anyone who wants a grown-up love story with the weight of history behind it. It is for players who enjoy narrative choices, quiet drama and the feel of a well-told period story.
