The story

Spenser, a former Boston patrolman who just got out from prison, teams up with Hawk, an aspiring fighter, to unravel the truth behind the death of two police officers.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-washed Boston streets and warm tungsten interiors give this one the easygoing look of a studio buddy comedy, with bars, diners and sweaty gyms rendered in saturated, practical colour rather than gritty grime. The camera stays mostly conventional and mobile, with plenty of two-shots over breakfast tables and quick handheld moves through chases, and the score leans on upbeat guitar and brass that keeps the mood buoyant even when the stakes rise. Its vibe is cheerful and loose, a wisecracking, friendly good time with a light crime plot underneath. The pace is brisk and talkative, with banter driving most scenes and fights that arrive in bursts. The emotional register stays warm: a former cop with a rough past and a young boxer slowly build a sincere, bickering friendship, and the film rewards their rapport more than its mystery. Violence is moderate, with several punch-ups, gunfire and a few bloody moments, but nothing lingers or turns graphic. Strong language and occasional crude humour appear throughout. It suits a lazy weekend evening or a crowd watch, and fits viewers who want an upbeat, sympathetic action comedy with a comfortable, uncomplicated heart.
