The story
E-book extra: Neil Gaiman's "Writing and the Imagination."In the tranquil fields and meadows of long-ago England, there is a small hamlet that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. Just to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here, in the hamlet of Wall, young Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. And here, one crisp October eve, Tristran makes his love a promise -- an impetuous vow that will send him through the only breach in the wall, across the pasture ... and into the most exhilarating adventure of his life.
What it’s like
Crisp October dusk over pastoral English fields, with a fairy-tale border of old stone and hedgerow, and a storybook voice that moves easily between wry and wondering. Gaiman's prose is brisk, witty and conversational, full of small comic asides and gently ironic narration that keeps the sense of an old tale being told aloud by a fire. The world it opens onto is lush and strange: the Faerie side glimmers with markets, ruined palaces, bright weather and eerie sorcery, while the village stays plain, damp and familiar, which gives the book a comfortable contrast between hearth and wonder. The mood is light-hearted adventure with a warm, nostalgic glow and a tender undercurrent of first love. Pacing is loose and episodic, moving from one wayside encounter to the next, with an eager young man's wide-eyed growth at its centre, learning what he is willing to risk for someone who may not be ready to see him. Violence is brief and mostly comic or stylised, with occasional sharp menace, a few grim fates, and some mild sensuality, but nothing sustained or graphic. Suits a rainy-Sunday read, a comfort reread, or anyone wanting a gentle, witty fairy tale for romantics and fantasy lovers.
