The story

A war veteran turned private detective operates out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, his unique insight and background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving complex crimes that have baffled the police. Based on the bestselling novels written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

What it’s like

Gritty London winter light: grey daylight leaking through the cramped rooms of a Denmark Street office, drizzle-streaked windows, and the smoky amber of pubs and tube platforms after dark. The camera stays close and restless, with handheld walks through Soho backstreets and tight two-shot conversations where faces fill the frame, and the palette runs to muted browns, wet slate and sodium orange. The score leans on low strings and brooding pulses that rise under interrogation scenes, while the city's traffic and footsteps carry much of the ambience. The vibe is wintry, melancholy and quietly tense, the kind of detective drama to watch late on a weeknight with the lights low. Pacing is deliberate, with each episode building through patient questioning and gradually revealed backstory. Its central figures are a damaged ex-soldier and his determined assistant slowly building trust and a working partnership through shared grief and friction. Violence is present and can be sudden and grim, including stabbings, assaults and dead bodies shown on screen, though gore is moderate rather than extreme, and there are brief sexual references and some strong language. Suited to viewers who want a character-driven mystery with atmosphere and emotional weight rather than a light, gentle watch.
