The story

A victim of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 helps the police track down the killers while struggling to recover from devastating trauma.

What it’s like

Muted, naturalistic daylight and drab Boston interiors give Stronger a grounded, unglamorous look, with hospital corridors under flat fluorescent light and a wheelchair-bound world rendered in close, unhurried handheld framing that stays near its characters' faces. Director David Gordon Green favors long takes over flashy cutting, so the rehabilitation rooms, kitchens and family living spaces feel lived-in and quietly heavy. The score is sparse and restrained, leaving room for the grind of physical therapy and the awkward silences between people. The mood is raw, wry and subdued, with sharp bursts of anger and grief cutting through long stretches of stillness. Violence is confined to a brutal but brief depiction of the bombing and its immediate aftermath, with graphic injuries and blood shown in hospital and street scenes; there is no gore beyond that and no sexual content. Emotionally it is intense and sometimes harrowing, so it suits viewers who want a serious, performance-driven study of trauma and recovery rather than something gentle or escapist.
