The story

An acclaimed writer, his ex-wife, and their teenaged children come to terms with the complexities of love in all its forms over the course of one tumultuous year.

What it’s like

Warm, lived-in indie comedy-drama with bright, natural daylight in suburban North Carolina homes: kitchens with sunlit counters, cluttered writing desks, autumn leaves and the soft gold of a Thanksgiving table. The camera stays close and conversational, favoring medium shots and two-shots over flashy movement, so the family's awkward silences and sudden laughter feel like they're happening in the room with you. The score is light and acoustic, with the odd indie-pop needle drop, and the dialogue is quick and literate, full of people talking around what they actually mean. The mood is wry, bittersweet and tender, with comedy rising out of embarrassment and grief. Its arcs follow a divorced novelist, his ex-wife, and their teenage children slowly reckoning with betrayal, dating, creative blocks and the uneasy business of forgiving one another. Intensity is low to moderate: some cheating and emotional fallout, a drug-use thread, and sharp arguments, but no real violence and no graphic content, with the sting kept conversational. It suits a rainy weekend, a slow evening in, or a comfort watch, and it is for people who enjoy character-driven family stories with heart and sharp humor.
