The story

Omnibus collection of four early Bachman novels ([Rage][1], [The Long Walk][2], [Roadwork][3], [The Running Man][4]) and the essay "Why I Was Bachman" ([source][5]) [1]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL149154W/Rage [2]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL14917769W/The_Long_Walk [3]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL149156W/Roadwork [4]: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL149188W/The_Running_Man [5]: https://stephenking.com/library/bachman_novel/bachman_books_the.html

What it’s like

Blunt, plainspoken American prose with a restless, close-third immediacy: sweat-soaked roads under flat grey skies, fluorescent-lit classrooms, the blue glare of a television that never switches off. Four stories share a cold, mid-century-to-near-future texture of worn highways, cheap diners and crowds that watch rather than help. The pace is propulsive and claustrophobic, with long stretches of grinding endurance (a walk that never stops, a man who cannot leave his demolition site) broken by sudden, ugly eruptions of violence. Intensity is high: frequent shootings and bloody deaths, some described in graphic detail, with a steady undertow of cruelty and fear, and little comfort on the way through. Moods run from bleak to despairing, with a dark wit in the television-spectacle satire. Emotionally it is grim and unsparing, with characters pushed toward breaking point rather than redemption. It suits a late-night read, a long commute where you can't put it down, or anyone who wants lean, relentless dread. Not for anyone seeking gentle, cozy, or low-stakes reading.
