The story

Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as the Joker.

What it’s like

Cold, desaturated Gotham rendered in steel blues, sodium orange and wet asphalt, with the city's night rarely reading as anything but stormy: rain-slick streets, smoke-hazed skylines, and interiors lit by hard practical sources like fluorescents, police floodlights and the glow of monitors. Nolan favours IMAX-scale wide shots of the city alongside tight, handheld-feeling close-ups during set-piece chases, and the camera often holds still while chaos plays out at the edges of the frame. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score is a throbbing, low-register synth pulse that builds dread rather than release, broken by sudden silences. The vibe is grim, tense and operatic, with a sustained sense of moral strain. Pacing is long and deliberate, with the action arriving in heavy bursts. Violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, including shootings, explosions, fistfights and a few stark scenes of cruelty and menace, with more threat than gore. Sexual content is minimal. Best for viewers who want a dense, adult crime epic with a psychological edge, not something light or gentle, and suited to a focused night watch rather than background viewing.

People love The Dark Knight for its grim, morally tangled crime story and a lead who hides grief and doubt behind a controlled, stern manner. The pull is the feeling of a city sliding into chaos and the cost of choosing to stand against it.
