The story
Renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou has sworn vengeance upon the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. In addition to his regular team, he is joined on his boat by Ned, a man who believes Zissou to be his father, and Jane, a journalist pregnant by a married man. They travel the sea, all too often running into pirates and, perhaps more traumatically, various figures from Zissou's past, including his estranged wife, Eleanor.
What it’s like
Symmetrical, dollhouse-precise compositions in saturated, storybook colour: pastel pinks and mustard yellows set against the wash of teal and grey-blue ocean, with the ship's red-capped crew framed like figures in a diorama. Camera moves are slow lateral pans and locked-off tableaux, interrupted by sudden stop-motion cutaways and handheld underwater footage that lends the whole thing a home-movie tenderness. Sound leans on a warm, curated mix of Mexican-era rock and Portuguese folk, with the occasional David Bowie cover sung in Portuguese, and the sea itself is often reduced to a flat, bright backdrop. The vibe is whimsical melancholy, a little deadpan and a little heartbroken, best suited to a lazy afternoon or a late-night watch when you want something odd and warm rather than fast. Pacing is brisk but deliberately off-kilter, with quiet pauses that let awkward silences land. Its people are wounded and self-absorbed, and the emotional arc follows a grieving father and an unexpected son slowly, clumsily learning to be family. Violence is comic and sporadic: pirate skirmishes and a shark attack played for absurdity rather than gore, with some crude language and a few frank sexual references. It suits viewers who love quirky ensemble comedy, deadpan family dysfunction, and carefully designed worlds.
