The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Directed by John Ford

The story

Questions arise when Senator Stoddard attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance. As the territory's safety hung in the balance, Doniphon and Stoddard, two of the only people standing up to him, proved to be very important, but different, foes to Valance.

What it’s like

Black-and-white widescreen compositions with deep focus, where the frame is often split between a foreground figure and a far-off town or landscape, and John Ford's static, staged long takes hold a whole street or saloon in one even gaze. The light is hard and flat by day, dusty and sun-bleached on the frontier streets, then drops into smoky lamplit interiors where faces emerge from shadow. The sound is sparse: wind across open country, boots on boardwalks, a single held silence before a showdown, with Cyril Mockridge's restrained score rising only at the edges of the story. The vibe is elegiac and wry, a reflective, talky western with a faintly bittersweet undertow about how legends get made and how easily the truth gets buried. Pacing is unhurried and conversational, with long dialogue passages and slow reveals that loop back through the past. Emotionally it is melancholy and quietly funny, following two men who each carry a private debt to the town and to each other, and how their pride and compromise shape the story people choose to tell. Violence is brief and infrequent: a few fistfights, a whip-lashing beating, and a couple of gunshots, with no gore and little lingering cruelty. It suits a slow rainy afternoon, a thoughtful late-night watch, or anyone who enjoys classic westerns with a reflective, grown-up sensibility and a taste for old-fashioned craft.
