The story

A retelling of the classic Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, miser extraordinaire. He is held accountable for his dastardly ways during nighttime visitations by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

What it’s like

Warm, candlelit Victorian London rendered in rich, storybook colour: soot-grey streets dusted with snow, glowing shop windows, fat amber lamplight and deep bottle-green shadows inside Scrooge's cold, cluttered counting house. The camera moves with a gentle, classical grace, sweeping over cobbled lanes and through the fog toward a crooked row of chimneys, while the puppets' textured felt and fur catch the firelight. Songs arrive with big, cheerful orchestral swells and bouncy music-hall tunes, and the Ghosts' scenes shift into eerie, glowing dreamscapes that feel more uncanny than frightening. Pacing is brisk and playful, with running gags and cheeky asides from Michael Caine's sincere, unshowy Scrooge and Gonzo and Rizzo's chatter as narrators, balanced by quieter moments of regret and tenderness. Its emotional register is sentimental and hopeful, a miser's slow thaw into generosity and kindness. Intensity is very low: no violence or gore, only mild peril and some spooky imagery from the ghosts. A comfort-watch for a snowy holiday evening, and for families or anyone wanting a gentle, funny, big-hearted Christmas story.
