The story

After a long hiatus -- The Caped Crusader is back and cooler then ever, in the animated action-packed series -- The New Batman Adventures. Picking up years after Batman: The Animated Series, the series highlights Batman and his crimefighting cadre of Nightwing, Robin and Batgirl, as they join forces to battle Gotham City's classic super-villains.

What it’s like

Sharp-angled, hand-drawn animation in deep Gotham blues and shadowed purples, with the city's art deco towers rendered as night silhouettes against sodium-orange streetlight. The 1997 revamp of the series brought brighter, more saturated color and a slicker, more streamlined look than its predecessor, while its noir sensibility lingers in rain-slick rooftops, long shadows and dim interiors. Sound leans on a brassy, jazz-tinged orchestral score with stingers that punch in on every reveal, and fight scenes are choreographed in clean, kinetic bursts with whooshing impacts. The vibe is moody but buoyant, a stylish crime-serial comfort watch for evenings when you want a tight, self-contained episode with a clear arc and a sense of justice. Violence is stylized and frequent, with punches, gunfire and villain-on-hero brawls, but there is no gore, and menace comes through threat and shadow rather than graphic harm. Themes of loss, loyalty and a lonely hero sit under the action, and the mentorship between Batman and his young partners gives it warmth. Suited to fans of classic superhero stories, detective mysteries and anyone who likes well-crafted animation for a relaxed, engaging watch.
