The story
Prince Amleth is on the verge of becoming a man when his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps the boy's mother. Two decades later, Amleth is now a Viking who's on a mission to save his mother, kill his uncle and avenge his father.
What it’s like
Brutal, mythic and painterly, with a dark, earthy palette of ash, soot, bone-white snow and firelit orange, and a camera that often holds still on wide Icelandic landscapes of black sand, volcanic ridges and smoke-stained longhouses. Director Robert Eggers frames with a rigid, almost theatrical symmetry, then breaks it in sudden handheld lunges during fights that land with a thudding, close-up physicality. The score is low, droning and percussive, more ritual chant than melody, and the silences between clashes feel heavy with weather and wind. Vibe: grim, feverish, austere, a dream of pagan fate rendered in mud and blood. It suits a late-night watch with the lights off, or a weekend when you want something primal and unhurried. The pacing is deliberate, building toward violence rather than rushing through it, and the emotional arc follows a driven man whose vengeance slowly strips him down to something elemental. Intensity is high: frequent graphic gore, bloody sword and axe combat, sexual violence and sustained cruelty, with a heavy, mournful dread throughout. For viewers who want folklore-soaked severity and visual craft, not for anyone seeking gentleness.
