The story

A domineering but charismatic rancher wages a war of intimidation on his brother's new wife and her teen son, until long-hidden secrets come to light.

What it’s like

Wide, sun-scorched Montana ranges and dusty, windswept ranch yards, shot with a patient, painterly eye: long compositions that hold on hills and open sky, then tighten into candlelit kitchens and dim bunkhouses where lamplight pools warm and amber against bare timber. The palette runs to ochre, sage, and faded denim, with a cool, slightly sickly green in the dark interiors that keeps the unease alive. Sound does a lot of the work: a plaintive banjo tune recurring like a thread, long stretches of wind, creaking wood, and the scrape of cutlery, with the score pulling back to near silence at the moments that matter most. Pacing is slow and deliberate, almost stately, and the register is tense, cruel, and psychologically coiled, with sadism and quiet menace that land as humiliation and dread rather than gore; violence is sparse but sharp when it comes, and there are frank sexual undertones and a brief, unsettling erotic charge. Cigarette smoke, whiskey, and rough hands give it a lived-in grit. It suits a late, alone-in-the-dark watch rather than anything light, and it is for viewers who like slow-burn character studies, Western landscapes, and emotional tension built from what goes unsaid.
