The story

Fresh out of law school and desperate for work, idealistic rookie Rudy Baylor takes on a powerful insurance company accused of denying a dying boy’s claim. Teaming up with a scrappy, unlicensed paralegal, he finds himself in a David-versus-Goliath courtroom battle that tests his ethics, courage, and belief in justice.

What it’s like

Warm, dusty Southern light fills the courtrooms and cramped offices of Coppola's 1997 legal drama, with its soft golden interiors, rain-soaked parking lots and humid Memphis evenings giving the film a faded, honest texture. The camera moves with unhurried care, lingering on faces during tense cross-examinations and on the tired clutter of a small-time law practice, while the score swells gently with strings and piano whenever the underdog gathers courage. Its mood is earnest, hopeful and a little old-fashioned: warm, tender and sincere rather than cynical. The pace is measured, building steadily through hearings and jury deliberation toward a rousing, emotional climax. Its people are a young idealist and a ragged, loyal sidekick slowly learning what they're willing to risk for a dying boy and a family who needs to be heard. Violence is absent; the stakes are emotional, with a child's illness handled gently and some sober talk of death. Suits viewers who want an inspirational courtroom story with heart, a comfortable Sunday-afternoon watch, and people who enjoy a classic underdog-versus-giant narrative.
