The story

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his son, he travels to Recife during Carnival but soon realizes that the city is not the safe haven he was expecting.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and humid, with warm daylight on crowded streets and the saturated colors of 1970s Recife, where Carnival crowds, street parades, and cheap fabrics fill the frame. Mendonça Filho favors unhurried framing and long observational takes, so ordinary rooms, lobbies, and sidewalks hold their attention while something unseen presses at the edges. The grain feels analog and soft, and the soundtrack moves between period pop, carnival percussion, and low, uneasy tension. The vibe is watchful and quietly paranoid, a slow-burning unease under a festive surface, suited to a late evening alone or a focused afternoon when you want atmosphere more than momentum. The pacing is deliberate, with long stretches of waiting and small human exchanges. The central man is guarded and tired, and the film traces his cautious, sometimes tender attempts to stay connected to the people around him. Violence is present but sparing: sudden, brief, and harsh when it arrives, landing as shock rather than sustained gore, with brief sexual content and no lingering cruelty. It suits viewers who want political history filtered through texture and mood, and those drawn to slow, observant cinema with a steady current of dread.
