The story
Catalina Martín desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. Especially since her little white lie about her American boyfriend has spiralled out of control. Now everyone she knows—including her ex and his fiancée—will be there and eager to meet him. She only has four weeks to find someone willing to cross the Atlantic and aid in her deception. New York to Spain is no short flight and her raucous family won’t be easy to fool. Enter Aaron Blackford—her tall, handsome, condescending colleague—who surprisingly offers to step in. She’d rather refuse; never has there been a more aggravating, blood-boiling, and insufferable man. But Catalina is desperate, and as the wedding draws nearer, Aaron looks like her best option. And she begins to realize he might not be as terrible in the real world as he is at the office.
What it’s like
Bright, sun-warmed summer in a book that moves between a crowded Manhattan office and a noisy, golden Spanish family wedding, with the heat and sea air carried on every page. The prose is light, chatty and quick, full of wry internal asides and sharp banter that turns sweet as the pages go, so it reads fast and easily in short bursts. Its vibe is playful, bickering and warm, with a sunny, low-stakes comedy under the tension. It suits a beach-chair afternoon, a long-haul flight, or a lazy weekend read when you want to be teased and swept along. The romance is slow to ignite: two prickly colleagues who clash at the office gradually discover a softer side to each other, and the sexual content is steamy and explicit, with heat building across many scenes rather than arriving all at once. Violence is absent; the stakes are emotional, family-driven embarrassment and awkward pretence. It is for readers who love enemies-to-lovers banter, fake-dating setups, and a spicy, feel-good summer romance.
