The story

May Munro is a woman obsessed with getting revenge on the people who murdered her parents when she was still a girl. She hires Ray Quick, a retired explosives expert, to kill her parents' killers. When Ned Trent, embittered ex-partner of Quick's, is assigned to protect one of Quick's potential victims, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

What it’s like

Hot, sodium-lit Miami nights and sun-bleached daytime glare give The Specialist a glossy, saturated 1990s action look: wide establishing shots of pastel high-rises and sweating streets, rain-slick car chases through neon, and a lot of restless handheld camera once the explosions start. The score leans on bombastic synth-and-orchestra swells that rise under every fuse and gunshot. Its vibe is sleek, sweaty and pulpy, a neo-noir with its heart in old-school revenge melodrama, best suited to a Friday-night action watch or a loud, late-night rewatch with friends. The pacing is brisk and escalating, with the tension built on a grudge-driven cat-and-mouse between a reluctant hired killer and a hardened ex-partner, while the central romance between the two leads carries a slow, prickly charge. Violence is frequent and explicit: gunfights, fistfights and large-scale bomb blasts with bloody consequences, plus some menace and cruelty tied to organized crime, though it stays more stylized than grisly. It suits viewers who want big-screen spectacle, brooding antiheroes and a dose of 90s excess, not anything gentle or quiet.
