The story
The Time Traveller, a dreamer obsessed with traveling through time, builds himself a time machine and, much to his surprise, travels over 800,000 years into the future. He lands in the year 802701: the world has been transformed by a society living in apparent harmony and bliss, but as the Traveler stays in the future he discovers a hidden barbaric and depraved subterranean class. Wells's transparent commentary on the capitalist society was an instant bestseller and launched the time-travel genre.
What it’s like
Spare, measured Victorian prose with a clear, conversational narrator who reports strange sights as if describing a dinner party, so the wonder arrives in calm, precise sentences. The world of the far future is rendered in pastel, sun-drenched, almost idyllic images: flower gardens, grand ruined palaces, slender pale people in loose robes, all bathed in long afternoon light that slowly turns eerie. Then the mood curdles into a dim, claustrophobic dread as the narrator descends into underground passages, where the air grows still and the darkness feels close and thick. Its vibe is wistful unease, a gentle melancholy edged with creeping horror, best suited to a slow afternoon, a late reading session with a lamp on, or a quiet long-haul journey. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with short chapters that end on small revelations, and the emotional register stays cool and reflective rather than tense. The violence is brief and mostly implied; the menace lies in atmosphere and a few unsettling encounters rather than gore. It suits readers who enjoy classic speculative fiction, social satire, and the pleasure of a mind pondering vast stretches of time.
