The story
Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob, knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.
What it’s like
Cool, saturated blue-grey Pacific Northwest daylight, overcast skies, rain-slick forest roads and dense green firs, with the grey-blue palette warmed by the occasional glow of a campfire or a wintry snowfield. Director David Slade frames the lovers in shallow-focus close-ups and slow push-ins, switching to wide landscape shots and hand-held chaos when the action turns, while the glossy digital image keeps everything crisp and a little airbrushed. The score is an orchestral-pop mix of brooding strings, pulsing synth and mid-tempo indie tracks that swells during the romantic beats and drops out for tense standoffs. Vibe: moody teen romance with a glam-gothic sheen, a rainy-afternoon watch for fans who want longing looks and high-stakes melodrama. Pacing is steady, dialogue-heavy in the quieter scenes, and the emotional register stays earnest and sincere, following a young woman pulled between two devoted men and her own growing up. Intensity is moderate: several fight sequences with vampires and wolves, some bloodless violence and a grisly newborn attack, but no real gore, and romance stays chaste with a little kissing and tender intimacy. For viewers who like brooding romance, supernatural teen drama and a sleek, moody look more than action.
