The story

The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true identity.

What it’s like

Muted, fog-soaked English gothic: grey daylight over marsh and moor, candlelit interiors with deep shadow, and a palette of greys, browns and sickly greens broken only by the pale flare of a lamp or a child's white dress. Camera work is patient and often static, with long held shots of empty corridors, cluttered nurseries and rooms that seem to wait for something to move, and the score leans on low strings and sudden sharp stabs that make silence itself feel loaded. The sound design matters as much as the image: creaking floorboards, distant bells, the hush of wind across a causeway. Its vibe is brooding and melancholic, with dread building slowly rather than arriving in bursts, and it suits a dark, quiet evening alone or a wintry weekend with the lights low. The pacing is deliberate, the emotional register is grief-struck, and the central arc follows a sceptical, grieving man forced to confront what he has refused to see. Scares are sharp and frequent but mostly jump-driven, with some disturbing images of dead children and a few violent deaths; gore is minimal, and cruelty is more implied than shown. Best for viewers who enjoy atmospheric ghost stories, period settings and a steady, haunted mood over splatter.
