The story

A solitary scholar discovers an ancient bottle while on a trip to Istanbul and unleashes a djinn who offers her three wishes. Filled with reluctance, she is unable to come up with one, so the djinn tries to inspire her with his stories.

What it’s like

Warm, unhurried and visually lush, with the lived-in gold of Istanbul at dusk, sun-bleached hotel rooms, and candlelit interiors where shadows pool in deep amber. George Miller's camera moves with a storyteller's patience, gliding through jewel-box fantasy sequences of palaces, desert dunes and swirling smoke that contrast with the crisp, cool-toned realism of a modern academic's life. The sound is a soft layer of Arabic and Turkish voices, rich orchestral swells and silences that let a single line of dialogue breathe. Its vibe is wistful and contemplative, a cozy-melancholy fable best suited to a slow evening, a rainy Sunday or a quiet solo night with a glass of wine. The pacing is leisurely, built on long conversations and nested tales, and the emotional register is tender and bittersweet, following a guarded, self-contained woman slowly opening herself to wonder and to another person's hard-won humanity. The intensity is low: there is some brief peril and a few moments of stylised, fantasy-tinged violence, but no gore and nothing graphic, though its romantic and sensual undertones are present. It suits viewers who want romance steeped in myth, ornate visual storytelling, and a gentle, reflective spell.
