The story

Trials of Mana is the third installment of the Mana series, developed by Square under the direction of series creator Koichi Ishii. The game takes place in a new world where, once again, the Mana Tree is under threat from an ancient evil thought sealed away. Players choose three from among six heroes as the chosen wielder of the Mana Sword and their two companions on the journey to claim the holy blade and preserve what remains of the Mana power.

What it’s like

Chunky, colourful pixel sprites drift across overworld maps of meadows, deserts and ruined towers, with a day and night cycle that shifts the palette from bright daylight to deep blue dusk. Battles burst with spell effects and ring out to a lush, melodic score that swells in the big moments and softens into gentle town themes. The pace is steady and episodic: quiet village stops and camp chatter give way to bursts of action that ramp up as party members grow stronger. The emotional register is earnest and hopeful, with the friendships and personal grudges that drive each hero's path given room to breathe. Violence is fantasy combat against monsters and soldiers, with no gore and a cartoonish tone, though themes of revenge and a captured princess add some weight. It suits a lazy weekend session, a comfort replay, or anyone who loves old-school adventures with a colourful, bittersweet glow, and it works especially well for players who enjoy choosing a party and watching their bonds develop over a long, unhurried journey.
