The story

Makoto Misumi is just an ordinary high school student living a regular life, but all of a sudden gets summoned to the other world to become a "hero." The goddess of the other world, however, insults him for being different and strips his "hero" title, before casting him off to the wilderness at the edge of the world. As he wanders the wilderness, Makoto encounters dragons, spiders, orcs, dwarves, and all sorts of non-human tribes. Because Makoto comes from a different world, he is able to unleash unimaginable magical powers and combat skills. But just how will he handle his encounters with various species and survive in his new environment. In this fantasy, Makoto tries to transform the other world into a better place despite the humans and gods having turned their backs on him.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated fantasy colors, with sunlit green forests, pale blue skies and warm cozy interiors, give way to glowing magical effects during fight scenes. Wide landscape shots of grassland and mountain ridges alternate with close, comic-timed character reactions. The soundtrack leans on bouncy orchestral fantasy cues and cheerful openers, with swelling strings for battles. The vibe is lighthearted and easygoing, with a comfortable, slightly goofy adventure rhythm that suits a weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or background viewing while doing chores. A lonely outsider gradually finds found family among the non-human communities he meets, and the emotional beats stay warm and modest. Violence is regular for an action fantasy: creature battles, magical blasts and some blood, but without gore or lingering cruelty. Fanservice and romantic teasing appear at a moderate level. It is for viewers who want an upbeat fantasy with heart, spectacle and a steady sense of humor.
