The story

Twelve Years a Slave is a harrowing memoir about one of the darkest periods in American history. It recounts how Solomon Northup, born a free man in New York, was lured to Washington, D.C., in 1841 with the promise of fast money, then drugged and beaten and sold into slavery. He spent the next twelve years of his life in captivity on a Louisiana cotton plantation.

What it’s like

Plain, unadorned nineteenth-century prose carries this account: a witness's voice that is measured, precise about dates, wages, distances and the names of people and places, and rarely rhetorical even when the events are unbearable. The sensory world is one of cotton fields under a punishing Louisiana sun, the damp heat of the Red River country, cramped slave quarters, the sound of the whip and of work songs drifting over the fields, and the long grey hours of the journey south by boat and wagon. Its mood is steady, sorrowful and watchful, with flashes of dry dignity and hope that never quite lift the weight of what is recorded. Violence is present throughout and not softened: whippings are described in plain detail, and cruelty, degradation and the threat of death recur across the years, so this is not a gentle read. It suits a patient, focused reader, someone who wants history told from inside a single life rather than as a survey, and it lands best in quiet, uninterrupted hours when there is room to sit with it. Readers drawn to slave narratives, American history, and first-person witness accounts will find its emotional register sober, restrained and deeply human, following one man's struggle to survive and to find his way back to his family.
