The story

Bollywood film about the famous courtesan of the title. Aishwarya Rai stars in the lead role. The film is directed by J.P. Dutta and also stars Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. A remake of the original directed by Muzaffar Ali and released in 1981.

What it’s like

Lavish period interiors in saturated jewel tones: ruby and saffron silks, chandeliers, tiled courtyards, and rooms lit by lamplight and candle glow that turn gold at the edges. The camera lingers in composed, stately frames, holding on faces in close-up and drifting over carved screens and embroidered cloth. Sound is built on classical ghazals, with tabla, harmonium and sung Urdu verse carrying most scenes, so it feels like sitting in a salon where poetry is the main event. The vibe is melancholic and opulent, a slow ache wrapped in brocade. Pacing is unhurried, with song sequences doing much of the emotional work between long stretches of longing and small, cutting social slights. A woman trained in verse and music navigates love, pride and the limits of her world, an arc about yearning and self-possession more than action. Intensity is low: no gore, little physical violence, and the cruelty is mostly social and emotional, delivered in glances and quiet humiliations. Suited to a rainy evening or a comfort watch for people who love romance, classical music and period grandeur, and don't mind a deliberate pace.
