The story

Underhero is a 2D side-scroller RPG adventure game with timing-based combat. It tells an intriguing and mysterious story, full of silly characters brimming with personality, quirky dialogue, and lots of weird humor. Inspired by Paper Mario games and RPGs in general, it tells the story of a world where the chosen hero has failed and an underling of the main villain takes his place as the new “hero”. Join the magical hilt Elizabeth the IV and the little Masked Kid, as they travel the world to restore Elizabeth’s long lost power, so they can defeat the tyrannical Mr. Stitches and save the world once and for all!

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn cartoon sprites on layered 2D backdrops give the side-scrolling world a storybook, paper-cutout cheerfulness, with saturated colours and loose, exaggerated character designs. The sound leans on playful chiptune-leaning melodies and cheeky sound effects that rise and drop with each timed button press, so the combat feels springy and rhythmic rather than harsh. The overall vibe is quirky, goofy and warm, with a mysterious undercurrent that keeps it from becoming purely silly. It suits an evening of casual play, a relaxed weekend session, or a stretch of gentle entertainment when you want something funny rather than tense. Pacing is brisk and episodic, moving between short exchanges of dialogue, light exploration and bouts of timing-based battle. Intensity is mild: cartoon combat with no gore and little that is frightening, though the story's villainy and its odd, uncanny characters add a touch of unease. Its emotional register is playful and affectionate, following a bumbling underdog stepping into a role he never expected. It is for players who enjoy Paper Mario-style role-playing, weird humour and quick, rhythm-based action in a bright, offbeat world.
