The story

Evelyn has devoted herself to helping people in hard times, and she struggles to connect with her son Ziggy, an aspiring internet star oblivious to the problems of the world. As Evelyn attempts to become a parent figure to an unassuming teenage boy she meets at her women's shelter, Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a politically conscious girl at his high school.

What it’s like

Bright, slightly flat suburban daylight and ordinary interiors, with a loose, observational camera that lingers on awkward silences and the blue glow of phone screens in dim bedrooms. The shelter scenes feel institutional and tired, with fluorescent hallways and crowded common rooms, while the teenage world leans on bedroom clutter and the restless energy of group chats. The mood is wry and tender, a comedy of embarrassment that turns, slowly, toward ache: a self-absorbed teen's clumsy courtship sits beside a mother who gives her attention to strangers and misses her own child. Dialogue carries the rhythm, with pauses that let the discomfort breathe. Language is frequent and sexual humour appears in teenage talk, but there is no graphic violence and little real danger, so the tension stays emotional. It suits a grey afternoon or a late evening when you want something funny, prickly and humane, and it is best for viewers who enjoy character-driven dramedy about family distance, earnest activism, and the gap between public virtue and private neglect.
