The story
As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to come together one final time. With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good.
What it’s like
Saturated storybook color, with emerald glass towers, gilded halls and a sunset-orange sky, shot in sweeping crane moves and lavish set-piece wide frames that give way to tight close-ups on faces during the quieter songs. The sound is full orchestral musical theatre: big belted choruses, swelling strings, and intimate piano-led ballads that drop the spectacle for a moment. The vibe is grand, bittersweet and emotionally heavy, with a steady undercurrent of political unease as a crowd turns on its scapegoat. Pacing is brisk and song-driven, building toward long emotional confrontations between two women whose friendship has been bent by years of rivalry and misunderstanding. Intensity sits at moderate levels: frightening crowd scenes, peril and some menace, but no gore and little explicit violence. It suits a rainy weekend with time to settle in, or a comfort rewatch for people who love sung-through drama, big voices and a story about loyalty, self-deception and the cost of seeing someone clearly. It is for viewers who want emotional sweep and visual abundance more than quiet naturalism.
