The story

They live beneath the earth in a prison of their own making. There is a view of the outside world, a spoiled and rotten world, their forefathers left behind. But this view fades over time, ruined by the toxic airs that kill any who brave them. So they leave it to the criminals, those who break the rules, and who are sent to cleaning. Why do they do it, these people condemned to death? Sheriff Holston has always wondered. Now he is about to find out.

What it’s like

Claustrophobic and procedural, with a cold, sealed-in feel: the prose stays close to bare concrete corridors, dim stairwells, hum of old machinery, and the constant weight of air that might not be safe. Lamplight and sodium-yellow glows in long curving tunnels, the grey-blue of a camera feed on a cracked screen, the close quarters of a crowded silo where everything is recycled and nothing is wasted. Its vibe is tense, austere melancholy, a slow dread that builds rather than spikes. Pacing is deliberate and layered, with chapters that shift viewpoint and stretch out small domestic routines before a sudden turn toward unease. The emotional register is grounded and quietly bleak, with an underlying current of curiosity and moral questioning; the central arc follows a stolid, methodical man who begins to doubt the order he has always served. Violence is present but not gratuitous: some grim deaths, brief moments of physical danger, and a steady sense of suffocation, with gore kept mostly off the page and dread doing most of the work. It suits a late-night read, a long rainy weekend, or anyone who likes cerebral dystopia with a strong sense of place and slow-burning suspense, and it is less suited to readers who want something light or warm.
